Plan to close Gitmo delayed

May 20th, 2009

News Story:

Plans to close the prison in Guantanamo Bay Cuba are being delayed by the Senate.  The Senate will not pass a bill to pay for the operation without a clear plan for what will happen to the detainees there after closing the facility.  Senators refuse to allow the prisoners to come to the US, and it is unlikely that other countries will admit them into their countries either.  Senators are criticizing President Obama for bringing the bill before them without all details worked out in advance.

Commentary:

I think the majority of Americans would approve of this, as it would be a large threat to National security to have these terrorists on US soil.

Seeing-Eye Horse Option for Muslims

May 18th, 2009

Recently I came across an article showing a mini horse being used in place of a seeing eye dog for Sunni Muslims. Sunni Muslims are unable to have dogs in their homes due to their religious beliefs. I have seen many uses for horses, but this is definitely a new use. Horses can live much longer than dogs, so their owners can recoup much of the cost, although horses do have additional physical needs that surpass a dog’s need. There are only a handful of these guide horses in the world.

May 17th, 2009

News story:

The filly Rachel Alexandra became the first horse of her gender to win the Preakness Stakes since Nellie Morse in 1924.

Commentary:

Such an exciting story this year at Preakness….the surprise winner of the Kentucky Derby vs. the talented filly Rachel Alexandra who was not entered in the Derby, but won Kentucky Oaks by a shocking margin just the day before the Derby.

Twin foals born prematurely return home

May 14th, 2009

News Story:

Twin foals born prematurely in the UK have gotten a clean bill of health and have returned home to their mother.  The odds of live twins being born to a mare are 5000 to 1 and only in 20% of all of those cases to both foals survive.  The birth of the twin foals came as a surprise to the owner of the mare.

Commentary:

Quite an amazing story, and kudos to the veterinary professionals who cared for these foals and helped them to survive.

Pentagon reform bill likely to be passed by the House

May 13th, 2009

News Story:

The US House of Representatives is expected to pass a bill to eliminate massive amounts of waste in the weapons programs at the Pentagon.  The White House is supportive of this bill.   Cost overruns and delivery delays being eliminated could save nearly $300 billion.  The hope is to “inject greater efficiency into the weapons acquisition system and truly ensure that we get the most bang for our taxpayer buck.”

Commentary:

This is a great start.  There is waste and a need for more efficiency in ALL of the US Government programs, not just weapons.   The Pork needs to be cut out.  We should be getting to keep our tax dollars, not sending it all to Washington so our government can squander it.  Although these cuts are only going to offset a tiny fraction of Obama’s federal bailout programs….if only we had cut the pork earlier….

Preakness Stakes this Weekend

May 12th, 2009

The Preakness Stakes are to be held this weekend.  The second stop on the way to horse racing’s triple crown.  This will be the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes.  The Preakness Stakes come right after the Kentuck Derby.  This is a test for the winner of the Derby to see if it was just a fluke, or the Derby winner has what it takes to be a major champion.    In this year’s Preakness Stakes, Calvin Borel becomes the first jockey to ever leave a winning ride from the Kentuck Derby.  It will be interesting, tune in for a great race!

Trailer Tip:Tire Pressure

April 28th, 2009

I cannot stress enough how important proper tire inflation can be.  Let’s face it, your entire trailer’s safety rests on proper tire inflation.  Tires which are not properly inflated are more likely to fail.  In addition to the safety risks, you have a two cost factors.  Number 1 to get the best fuel mileage, the tires must be inflated properly.  If the tires have to drag, then more fuel will be used.  Number 2, not properly inflating tires will cause tire to wear faster than normal conditions, thus forcing the need to replace tires faster.

Changes to West Falen Org

April 27th, 2009

We are pleased to announce that Westfalen horses will have a new active organization to support and promote them in the United States. The Westfalen Warmblood Horse Association of America is officially disbanded, but will have a new beginning under the leadership of Jayne Ayers, Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz and Barbara Putnam, with the approval of the Westfalen Pferdestammbuch in Germany. The name of the new organization is the Westfalen Horse Association. Our goals are to provide information and recognition for you and your Westfalen horses.

Through close association with the German office we will provide a stallion and membership directory, coordination of inspections and year-end awards for the USDF All-Breed participants. We plan to have a quarterly newsletter for our members. We will also act as a resource to help you find answers to questions on breeding and the registration of horses.

We are hoping that the new format will operate as more of a club, in that our members will have the ability to volunteer and participate in various functions of the organization. You can make a difference in the success of this venture! Please show your support by joining us in the re-establishment of this association. We feel it is well worth the effort.
